The Birch and the Star General Assembly 2024

04 Wednesday Sep 2024

The Birch and the Star has contributed to a renewal of 19th century art studies and brought together scholars and researchers from various fields and different parts of the world – it is not an exaggeration to say that the association proved to be an important catalyst for new transdisciplinary perspectives on 19th art and culture.

In science, a catalyst is no longer necessary when the desired transformation has taken place, and, likewise, it has become time to realize that perhaps The Birch and the Star has fulfilled its task.

The board invites all members of the Birch and the Star to a General Meeting with the aim of commencing preparations for the association’s dissolution.

The Birch and the Star is an association of specialists on the long nineteenth century in the fields of art, music, literature and history at large ,which is committed to the international promotion of research on the long nineteenth century. The objectives of The Birch and the Star are to promote research on the long nineteenth century produced in Finland or at the invitation of Finnish institutions, to organise symposia and seminars focused on the long nineteenth century, and to publish OpenAccess proceedings and essays on the long nineteenth century. The Birch and the Star organises co-operation between museums, university departments and cultural institutions in order to develop cross-disciplinary research on the long nineteenth century.

The association’s secretary is in charge of the minutes of board meetings, participates in preparations for the general annual meeting and in coordinating events and projects. The treasurer is in charge of the associations bank account and of preparing a financial statement for the general annual meeting. Both posts offer excellent opportunities to network with researchers of the long nineteenth century in Finland and to gain insight on their forthcoming research. The posts can also be combined.

We hope that the applicants have an interest for association work, interdisciplinary and international research on the long 19th century, a good command of English as well as a wish to acquaint oneself with the management and finances of an association. We hope that the selected candidate or candidates can occupy their posts as soon as possible.

For additional information and applications, please contact the association’s email address birchandstar@gmail.com 25 April, 2022.

Open Call for Papers: ROMANTIK – JOURNAL FOR THE STUDY OF ROMANTICISMS

Since the inauguration of Romantik – Journal for the Study of Romanticisms in 2012, the plural of romanticisms has been central. The intention was to welcome Nordic and other transnational articles that ranged over a variety of approaches to romanticism, including the written word, visual arts, history, philosophy, religion and print history. In 2020, a new editorial board widened the scope of romanticisms to include later expressions of Romantic thought operating with different forms of re-enchantment. We welcome both papers that deal with the epoque of romanticism as well as those addressing later expressions of Romantic thought.

Kultakausi ja kulttuurinen muisti

Gallen-Kallelan Museo, lauantai 5.3.2022 kello 13-15

Miten käsitys kultakaudesta on syntynyt? Millaisia tarkoituksia se on palvellut? Mitä kaikkea se on jättänyt varjoonsa? Miten myyttisen kertomuksen tilalle voidaan tuottaa moniäänistä historiankirjoitusta, jossa aiemmin vaiennettujen ja marginalisoitujen yksilöiden ja ihmisryhmien näkökulmat pääsevät esiin? Keskustelemassa Marja Lahelma, Hanna-Reetta Schreck, Nina Kokkinen ja Petra Lehtoruusu.

“The themes drawn from the key ideas supporting the European Revivals project are still powerfully resonant in the early 21st century. People’s lifestyles, indigenous material culture, national myths, forming personal or collective identities and the meaning of native landscape or nature in general still have an enduring significance today.”
–
Anna-Maria von Bonsdorff and Riitta Ojanperä in the foreword to European Revivals: From Dreams of a Nation to Places of Transnational Exchange.

This multifaceted and rich publication contains thirteen articles exploring the connections and correspondences that have helped to shape the identities of modern European nations. It marks the culmination of the ‘European Revivals’ research project and its accompanying series of six international conferences inaugurated in Helsinki in 2009 with subsequent conferences held also in Oslo, Krakow and Edinburgh.

The complete book can be downloaded as a Pdf on the Finnish National Gallery’s website at research.fng.fi.

Tahiti-verkkolehden tuorein numero tarjoaa viisi näkökulmaa Ellen Thesleffin moniulotteiseen taiteelliseen tuotantoon. Kirjoittajina ovat Anna-Maria von Bonsdorff, Marja Lahelma, Riikka Stewen, Hanna-Reetta Schreck ja Asta Kihlman. Esseet kuljettavat lukijaa läpi koko Thesleffin tuotannon lähtien alun symbolistisesta vaiheesta ja varhaisista 1890-luvun valokuvista, jatkaen 1900-luvun alun Italian-kauden ekspressionismiin ja sen suhteeseen muun muassa futurismiin, vitalismiin, liikkeeseen ja tanssiin.
